Many Christians are in awe of people who seem to ‘know’ what God’s will is, who seem to always be hearing the ‘still small voice of God’ and the ‘inner witness’ of the Holy Spirit. The Bible seems to also suggest something else. Consider the following two scenarios:

  1. ‘I prayed about it and God spoke to me’
  2. ‘I prayed about it and considered the pros and cons and I made a decision’

Many Christians will see the first scenario as the more ‘spiritual’ one. However,

Romans 12:2 says , Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Here Paul is quite clear, we can use our minds to discern the will of God.

Listen to the Holy Spirit by all means, but don’t throw your brain away when you do so.
